how to setup carrier voicemail on your smartphone

If you haven’t yet done it, set up voicemail on your phone. I recommend doing so even if you plan on using another voicemail service, such as Google Voice. That’s because carrier voicemail, despite all my grousing, remains a valid and worthy fallback option when those other services fail.

Even if you believe your voicemail to be set up and configured, consider churning through these steps, just to be sure:

1)Open the Phone app.

2)Tap the Action Overflow icon.

On some phones, tap the MORE button.

3)Choose Settings.

4)Choose calls or Call Settings.

Some phones may skip this step, showing a Voicemail item on the main Settings screen.

5)Choose Voicemail or Voicemail Service.

6)Choose Service to determine which voicemail service the phone uses.

The options are either Carrier (or Your Carrier) and Google Voice, although only one option might be available.

When the Carrier option is chosen, the phone number used for voicemail is the carrier’s voicemail service. You can confirm that number by choosing the setup or Voicemail Settings item on the Voicemail screen.

After performing the steps in this section, call the carrier voicemail service to finish configuration: Long-press the 1 key in the Phone app’s dialpad to access the voicemail system. Set your name, a voicemail password, a greeting, and various other steps as guided by the cellular provider’s cheerful yet banal robot.
