Exact Match Domains are essentially domain names that feature the exact keywords that a website is competing for at the search engine result pages

For a long while, this was one of the easiest and most convenient ways used by site owners to secure higher rankings and attract traffic to their sites. The use of exact match domains also meant that some website owners did not take the time to provide and update content that is relevant for site visitors. This resulted in many keyword domains that only had scrapped or low quality content ranking highly at the search engines. However, the introduction of the Exact Match Domain (EMD) updates by Google on September 26 2012 had the goal of de-ranking keyword domains that had low quality content and had previously appeared at the top of the search engines. Google considered these types of domains as spammy and undermining the usefulness of onsite optimization as well as valuable content. The Updates did not, however, sweep out all exact match domains and instead left out those keywords domains that offered content that is relevant to the keywords domains that offered content that is relevant to the keywords these websites are competing for.

Tips to Avoid EMD Penalties :

The introduction of the EMD updates does not mean that webmasters should no longer use these types of domains. On the contrary, it is valuable and possible to have a keyword-optimized domain and to avoid being penalized.

Eliminate low quality content from your keyword domain website – What makes for low quality content?  If you wrote content for the search engines instead of for your readers, then this low quality content will see you penalized by the upcoming EMD updates. The content on your website must be relevant to the keywords the website is competing for. It should also offer value to those who visit your website. Regularly update the website content.

Audit your inbound links – Unnatural links will also expose your EMD website to penalties. Check to see the source of all inbound links to your website to establish their trustworthiness. Eliminate all inbound links that undermine the trustworthiness of your website. At the same time, undertake an SEO optimization and ethical link building campaign. One great way to do this is to invest time in guest blogging.

Boost website trust – One effective way of boosting the trust factor for your website is to include social media buttons that allow readers to share your content. The more people share your content, the greater the trust your website will display. Note that people will not share poor content but will gladly share and recommend valuable content.

When it comes to EMD updates, trust seems to be the most important facet. As such, it is important to undertake measures that will ethically enhance the trust metric of your website. High quality, valuable content and social media presence are workable strategies to avoid penalization.
